Hey all,

I am considering buying a used boat that (as per the owner) has a Cobra 460 drive with bad gears. Any OMC experts out there with any suggestions or information about what kind of work this might entail? I currently own two boats (you can never have too many) both with Merc. drives which I maintain and repair myself, and can do the work myself (with the necessary tools). Just wanted a ballpark idea of the work and cost to do it myself. Thanks guys,

Re: OMC 460 gears

There are no gears available for that drive, not OEM, and not aftermarket. There just isn't any. There are also no couplers available for that engine, if you loose one, you are done. The 460 Fords and their drive are obsolete, just like OMC. They went out of buisness in 98.
Even if you found the gears used from somewhere, installing them without all the special tools to shim it properly would cause another failure in a very short time.

You CAN still "buy" the boat though..... Just plan on parting out all the OMC junk inside.

You could then buy a used Mercruiser or Volvo Penta Engine & Drive and install it in the hull.

To make that worth it, the previous owner would need to pay you to take it!!

Good Luck!
