Re: OMC 460 won't start

Rick,

Thats the right stuff, but man it's expensive. I've been reading a little on conversion and it sounds like a big pain in the arse. Doug Russell says "please call" which probably equates to "we don't have this".

I was hoping to find some kind of after market coil pack that would work, striking out. I had coil packs on my old outboard so I was hoping there would be some universal replacement. Does anybody know if this is true?

This sucks. Looks like my 454/Bravo III might happen sooner rather than later.

Bill,

I Still have the distributor, coil, ESA and the whole harness from the OMC 460 I had....... I was just going to put the whole mess on EBAY.

If you want it come on over and we'll come to some agreement.

It appears that trying to fix that electronic stuff may be harder than it's worth.

Cya/Rick

Bad spark does not affect crank turning effort; that would involve battery and ALL connections.

Would a faulty starter solenoid casue these slow cranking problems? I have the manual that says how to test it, however I don't have a "carbon pile" to test it as described.

Can I check it some other way? I have a multimeter.

Valves look good by the way.

Re: OMC 460 won't start

I can't remember where the starter solenoid is...Is it on the shift plate on top of the engine?

Now that I think about it I think it is. I replaced my starter solenoid. They're available at NAPA.

If the starter solenoids contacts are burned, it could make the starter run slow.

You could check by putting the multi-meter on the starter. Measure the cranking voltage at the battery and then measure it at the starter itself. If you have a large voltage drop the solenoid could be suspect.
Have someone turn the key when you're measuring the voltage.

Thanks Rick, it is located on the plate with the 50 amp and 12.5 amp fuses. I can't find those ignition coils anywhere, I'm gonna check NAPA as a last resort, if that doesn't work I'll let you know about the disributor.

I thought you were on vacation?

I just replaced a glow plug in the Wifes VW TDI, In Fact I'm siting in the car right now finishing up clearing the fault codes using my VAG-COM ......Ah!....electronic cars.......AHHHHH!!! electronic diesels!! I should have NEVER got that BSEE!!! Then I'd just take my electrical stuff to someone else!!!! Airline pilots are a lot like Cops!....They think they can do everything themselves!!:p
