have an 82 omc 5.0 with 800 stringer drive, boat ran fine last season; now have problem where it runs fine for about 10 minutes then starts bogging down as if starving for fuel, engine bogs down and pumping throttle gives no response. Have replaced coil, points, condensor, etc. Carb is an edelbrock 1409 installed new last season. Also checked compression and is 140 across all eight cyl. changed fuel filter and added water seperator..still same. Fuel seems to have tiny bit of sand particles ....oh..fuel pump was replaced 1 1/2 yrs ago(mechanical)any advice would be great...Thanks

Re: omc 5.0 bogging and surging

started the engine today and there was a good amount of smoke from outdrive exhaust that smelled very rich in fuel until engine warmed up...but i noticed that the temp gauge was normal at idle(160 deg) but when i shut the engine off the guage rose to 190 and if i turned the key to the on position the guage would drop back to 160...is this normal or could the engine be overheating and could overheating be causing the bogging down...also i put in a new thermostat at last visit to boat because the guage wasn't moving at all with boat idling for long time...thanks for any advice

Add Your Message Here
Post:
Username: Posting Information:
This is a public posting area. If your temp shows 160 when running, and then when you turn the key back on it goes back from the 190 to 160, I would think thats a good reading. Why your gauge goes up when the power goes off I don't know. When I turn the key off on mine, all the gauges but my tach go to 0. The tach stays at the last reading then goes to 0 when I turn the key on.

As for the bogging. I would try leaning out the fuel mixture and seeing what happens. I have an 84 5.0 OMC. I often have a problem with bogging when I jump on it the first run of the day. It always goes away after I run it a bit. Leaning it out might solve the problem. It sounds like a carb problem to me.....

Re: omc 5.0 bogging and surging

hi, thanks for replies
Things done: alternator belt was little loose, tightened to specs; changed thermostat; put fuel cleaner in tank; took of top of carb(edelbrock 1409 installed new last season) and adjusted float drop was 1/2 in to low and srayed with carb cleaner.
took the boat out next day ( fuel cleaner recommened letting sit for 24hrs- starbrite product)it ran great for the day then today problems started again: went out and after 10 minutes started to bog down and surge...got towed in and in dock i drained water seperator and gas had tiny dirt specs and some gell like substance forming on bottom( small little globs), i also removed paper fuel filter from canister and tore it open but it was clean...any ideas???? also after drained fuel was sitting in container for 15-20 min it became very cloudy wasn't clear anymore; in fact couldn't see bottom of container anymore...is that normal?
