Long story short.......
At one point I could only utilize forward or reverse, depending on how I adjusted the linkage. I could never get them both to work. After having someone else try to adjust it for me, He was able to get to it to the point that I could use both. From neutral, it will shift in either quite smoothly. However, after selecting either forward or reverse, I now have to shut off the motor to get it back into neutral so i can change course. Basically, it won't go back into neutral while motor is running. HELP!!!

Also, it sounds like your lower shift cable may be toast or your control has too much slop in it.

How would a toasted cable allow to shift into gear and not let it disengage and go into neutral?

It can for sure, the cable can pull on the lever just fine but then when the cable tries to push back the other direction it just sits there and the sheath moves instead.
98% of shifting failures are due to a bad lower cable.

If the cable guide is damaged, it will lessen the throw especially when under more force like taking it out of gear.

Tilt up the drive and look at the cable as it enters the drive from the starboard side. See what the cable housing looks like. That is where they fail.

OMC Shift cable can be the source of many problems. Take a look at my post. I had a tricky cable issue on a 3 year old cable. Didn't expect what I found. I've sinced replaced the cable & it really does shift with 2 fingers.
