Howdy, I'm new to the forum, so here we go.... I have a 1976 Invader 19ft with the 190HP Ford 302 and the 800 Electric Shift outdrive. Last summer reverse quit working all together. Prior to that it would work as it pleased. When it went out last year, it sounded like a clunk from the outdrive, and it stopped and stalled. After that if you put it into reverse it would go forwards, fun fun. I plan on working on it over spring break. Here's what I know right now. Last week I pulled the shift wires to see if they were getting voltage, both of them were. I then checked the resistance on both coils. The reverse coil is reading 6.7ohms and the forward coil is reading 6.8ohms. I put 12 volts to the forwards coil and the prop wouldn't turn counter clockwise, which let me know it was working, I then applied 12 volts to the reverse coil and the propeller would spin freely in both directions...... I'm thinking it's the reverse spring... I could be wrong though. I plan on pulling the lower unit apart next week to see what's inside, and I was wondering if anyone has done it without special tools, or if it is absolutely necessary. Any help is appreciated, thanks.

Wow, those are extremely helpful, way more detail than the Clymer's that I have. I am confused though.... In my Clymer's and every other thing I've read, it says the reverse coil is all the way in the back of the unit, and in the .pdf it is in the front. I'll find out shortly though, I can tell by the color of the wires. Thanks for all the help, these are amazing.

The OMC shift clutch spring can have the "dog ear" break which will keep it from tightening on the cone. It sounds like all the other items have checked out.

I'm pretty sure that's what broke. I think what happened last summer when it lurched is that the reverse coil shorted out and caused both coils to energize at the same time. If that did happen, I'm pretty the reverse spring broke.... I can only hope. I'm thinking about replacing the shift wire while I'm in there, good idea? Thanks again, this site is nice and the people are helpful and knowledgeable.

Pulled the lower unit apart today, the snap ring was a pain to get off, and I managed to break three bolts:facepalm: ....... But after all the fun, I got to the reverse coil and gears. The clutch spring was broke so I plan on ordering one tomorrow and maybe i'll have 'er out on the water by next Saturday, thanks again for all your help.

My spring and seal kit came in today. Both were relatively easy to install. But....... I found a split/short in the shift wire, which proved my suspicions that the wire shorted and engaged both coils at the same time destroying my reverse spring. I am waiting on a exhaust housing now because I managed to break a bolt extractor in the broken bolt....... I spliced the part of the wire that shorted and used the heat shrink tube to seal it water tight. Reverse and forward are working by hand, so I hope it will work when it goes back on. Thanks again.

Follow up.... Everything is working fine, running great. Hydrolocked once on the lake (Exhaust manifolds cracked over winter, replaced now). Have had her out 5 times already. Maybe I'll head 'er out today, thanks y'all.

Re: OMC 800 Electric Shift no Reverse

Hi there. I have the same problem with an older OMC sterndrive but mine won't go into forward. I suspect it's the same spring issue. As some of you guys seem to have made the repair yourself is there anyway you could share the procedure. Trying to work out if I should tackle this myself or leave it to the experts. I know its a very costly repair if done by a shop, at least where I live.
Any advise/ instructions truly appreciated.

Best to start a new thread and outline the issue. It's against the rules to post in an old thread, but more people will see it in a new thread anyway.

When you start your new thread, tell us what year, engine and drive you have. Also tell us if it was shifting fine before, or if this is a new to you boat.
