Whats the best way to fill up the tilt clutch with a Marine type grease? I've come across threads saying that this is the best type of lube to use, but have not seen how. I have the cover off right now as I cleaned it out. Thanks

just slather it in.

I prefer a really heavy gear oil like 140 - almost grease, but flows, but if you are committed to grease, pack it like you would a wheel bearing.

You could also replace the bottom plug with a grease fitting and the side fitting with a grease relief if you wanted to get fancy... that's probably what OMC should have done in the first place.

I can't find straight 140 where might be the best place to get the grease relief fittings and a bushing for the zerk to fit the threaded holes? Thanks
On edit: Probably just as easy to do like you said Howard pack it in like a bearing then put the cover on.Fittings would be nice for a squirt or two now and then:)

Just get one of the needle bearing fittings to go on the end of your grease gun(the thicker kind with a rubber tip, autozone carries them), undo the original oil fill, press the fitting to the hole and squirt away until it squeezes out of the shaft seal...or drill and tap the cover to install a zerk fitting......

Thanks Fastrat, I found 140 Sta Lube brand at carquest. This should hold me till next season then I;ll go to grease. I was thinking of packing grease in then putting the cover back on then the 140. I'm not in salt but want to make sure I get SS zerc and relief.

Re: OMC 800 Stringer Tilt clutch grease?

When I took mine apart I was surprise to see just how much water was in there, so I went straight grease. I'll let you know if straight grease fails me, but I figure there's enough oil soaked into the clutch discs to operate properly. I will say, make sure you either have the gasket for the housing cover or plan on making one. I went the straight silicone/gasket maker route first and the bronze gear in the case bound up, preventing the tilt from operating. Seems the .020" gasket stands the cover off enough to prevent any binding. Also, loosening the allen bolt in the end makes it very easy to put the clutch assembly back together if you take it apart...I found this out the hard way as mine was so gunked up I couldn't tell there was a bolt in there....
