I have a 21' cruiser that is in perfect condition. I would like to repower it with a merc bravo set up. The transom is in perfect condition. Does any have any experience in making this conversion? I have been told that the transom has to be replaced and that filling in the old hole and reinforcing the transom will not work.

Thanks for the help!

You might try a different forum for this post. Try the Mercruiser, Volvo, and OMC I/O or Inboard engine problems forum.

They were correct, the transom is the support for the engine and drive, just filling in the hole is not good enough.

I'd have to Disagree,........

Without seeing the Hull,....

I've done, or been involved with several of these conversions,.........
All but 1 were just a matter of Filling the Hole,+ Recutting the Cut-out.........
The 1 that needed a Complete New Transom was a Chris-Craft,.... It had Only a single piece of 3/4" plywood for the transom,.......

As long as you can end up with as close as possible to 2"s Thickness(Merc. specs call for 2"s Minimum, 2 1/8", Maximum),.....
It'll be Fine....

What material did you use to fill the hole. I was thinking about using West Systems products along with marine plywood.

Thanks for the info.

Re: OMC 800 TO MERCRUISER REPOWER

the problem is not all transoms are strong enough. the stringer units were just that. all thrust was taken on the hull stringers and none on the transom. on the merc units all thrust is taken on the transome and none on the stringers. but some hull manufacturers made the transoms beefy enough for either one. just depends on who made it and for what. there are some rather specific specs on transom thickness and flatness for the merc units. they cannot be exceeded either way or it does not work.
