I just bought a boat with a OMC Stringer 800 stern drive.I heard it's possible to replace the water pump without removing the stern drive from the boat. Can anyone tell me if that's true? Thanks for your help.

No, you must remove the outdrive from the boat, then you have to remove the upper gear housing from the lower. The pump is installed on the lower part of the upper gear housing.

If you go up to the Adults Only sticky at the top of the forum, I just added a post with a Seloc manual link in it. If you download it and go to page 9-12, you will get some idea what is involved.
If you plan on working on your own engine and drive, I would strongly suggest you look for the OEM manuals.

I"ve seen it done without removing the drive. The hsg and lower can be wiggled out of there with the upper still on the boat. Dropped just enough to swing out of the way. To me it looked like more work to do that than to just pull the drive. Possible yes, smart I don't think so. If you try this be very careful of the shift cable.

My theory with stringers is if they work don't mess with them except to change the oil. Can't count how many I've seen turn from a w/p job into work on the upper due to spline problems.
