OMC analog tachometer

Was in the process of replacing the tach on my boat(96 evinrude 70 hp) because of erratic readings when operating above 5500 rpm and after removing the guage panel and inspecting the back of the tach I noticed that the setting screw pointer was between 5 and 6.Does anyone know if this could possibly cause the intermittent tach problem I've been experiencing? The setting screw has smoothe travel as opposed to clicking into each setting position. Thanks for any input on this matter.

It's always possible that the circuit could have been jumping erratically between the 6 and 5 setting. I'd try setting it squarely on 6 and putting a dab of silicone to keep it there (or cover it with duct tape). Worth a try.

What are these settings for? I am in the process of installing an OMC tach...and was curious what my setting should be.

Thanks

Re: OMC analog tachometer

The OMC tachometers operate off of the charging system pulse rate. The OMC charging systems emit six (6) pulses.

Thanks for your input Mr.Reeves.I put it squarely to the six position and will heed your advice on the silicone to contain it.Probably put it in the water on Sat.16th or Sun.17th and post results.

Joe,
Is there a way to test for the charging system pulses? I just installed a tach and it is not working....I need to make sure it is getting the pulses....how can I check that?

THanks
