I am re-assembling my omc drive-shaft. I have the ball gear, but none of the old shims. Looking at the seloc repair manual I am a little confused as to how I measure for new shims. Anyone have any advice or good tricks. Thanks. It is a 1981 omc 800 series.

A little more info please.

Did you disassemble the drive? Or someone else?

How far did you take it down?

Are you doing both ball gears?

Just re-use the shim that is there. If all you doing is changing the ball gears and seals, there is no need to shim it.

If the original shims are lost, you will need to measure the gap.

Assemble the bearings and shaft in the mid drive, tighten the 4 bolts. Place a dial indicator pointing to, and contacting the end of the shaft. Pull the shaft out as far as it will go, zero the indicator, push the shaft in and read the gap. Get shims that are .002 to .004 under that. Do NOT go over, the bearings will overheat and fail.

Thanks, sounds simple enough, is a caliper the same thing as a dial indicator?

When I tighten the four bolts the whole assembly doesnt move at all (it does spin fine but their isnt end play), is their something wrong? My manual says I should put at least one shim in.

Re: Omc Ball Gears

Wait a second when i disassembled mine i made notes, see what happens when you get to 55 c.r.s.

Wire2 -You got that verbatim. In the absence of shims would i be wrong that maybe shims isn't required on this drive.

Only one way to find out, have to do the measurement, it's a b-yatch.

If not right your gonna be doing it again with new bearings inside a week.

Re: Omc Ball Gears

Thanks for your help, we took the whole setup to the local marine store, and a mechanic there was able to help us out. Thanks
