Hello everyone, new guy on the forum.

I came on here to do some research on my 92 Chriscraft with a chevy v8 motor and omc outdrive combo. I am having a problem with it going into foward or reverse, it tends to grind or stall, especially when it gets hot.

I read that it may be the lower drive cable.

My question is, if I pay a tech to do this for me, how much should this cost?

How many hours labor should I be billed for?

Work = New lower drive cable, means takingthe lower unit off, installing all new bellows and a gimble bearing while the drive is off, then re-install the drive and adjust everything...???

Please let me know.

Welcome Aboard!

Well,

A transom service kit can be $150 or more. A lower shift cable can be $75-$125.

If the U-joints and yoke are rusty and/or the upper seals are leaking drive oil into the bellows the parts & labor costs will be higher.

Labor to do the above can be 5 hours or more depending on how experienced the mechanic is at working on the (obsolete) OMC Cobras.

It is important that you find someone that knows what they're doing because if the mechanic adjusts your lower shift cable wrong, you'll damage the drive (shift dogs) in short order if they're not already damaged............. (if he changes the drive oil incorrectly, the drive will be destroyed quickly too)

If you'd like to know more about how all this goes together, you should obtain an OEM OMC service manual for your year model drive.

AND have a look at the following. http://www.hastings.org/~stuart/cobra/

Cheers,

Rick
