Do we have anyone out there who has done some lower unit work on 5.0 omc cobra (88') know if the clutch dog can be replaced without special tools? If so does the foward gear need to be replaced to match the clutch dog. I understand there was a modification by omc from 2 degrees to 5 degrees back in the 90's. on the gears and clutch dogs. If the foward gear is replaced is it then necessary to also change reverse gear? (Assuming it is in good shape). Thanks in advance.

I know with the stringer, (which most internal parts are the same) you need a puller for removal of the inner casing behind the prop (the name escapes me), and a few shimming tools for re-assembly. I have also read that you should replace the dog, gear set, and pinion all together. If you don't get a response, I can look in my cobra manual for you, but I can't get to that until this afternoon. I can give you the tool part #'s from it.

You will have to replace the gear set also. The other half of the shift dog is the gear, and they will be worn as bad as the shift dog clutch itself.<br />Then you will need to reshim and set the gears and bearings with special tools. No way around it.

Re: omc clutch dog.

I have been at Stuarts web site, very informative.Everything he suggests I have put into practise, but still experience the occasional thud or jump. I am assuming the clutch dog (and forward gear) are worn.(450 Hrs.)I guess disassembly is the only sure method of verification.
