I have just purchased a 1989 Bayliner Avanti 2955 and have had it raised out of the water for winter storage. I noticed that the water intake on the sterndrive were covered with some type of corrosion. Has this condition been restricting the flow of cooling water to the engine as I noticed that the port temperature gauge was running hotter than the starboard gauge and is it safe to clean the debis from the intakes with a wire brush?

Any input would be appreciated

John

could very well be your temp issue. you still want to change impellers on any new-to-you used boat, even if you were told they were just changed.
I would clean the intake area with a stiff brush and some muriatic acid if stubborn - not necessarily wire brush- there might be a screen inside there you don't want to damage. not sure as you have an aftermarket lower unit on there (GLM brand).. not too familiar with those lower units myself.
After that you can verify senders/gauge accuracy by taking the temp with an infrared temp gun.

also if that's fishing line all wound in the prop there (looks like heavy line), you want to pressure test your drives after removing the prop and getting that line out of there.

Thank you Commander for the advice. I didn't know that the lower unit was an after market product. I have some work to do to clean it up.

I have attached a picture showing the two stern drives and there are a couple of items secured to the transom between the two units, do you know what they are and what their functions are?

Welcome to iboats!

From left to right, the three items are:
1. Garboard drain (but I'll bet you knew that one already)
2. Transducer for fishfinder or depth gauge
3. Pitot for the speedometer
