Re: omc cobra 5.0 having trouble re-installing stern drive

Damnit man!!! Tried to post earlier and got booted... Ok, so yea. i got home yesterday with the new bellow, had it installed in 15min. Another 15Min. and i had the outdrive back on. All this talk about everything being lined up is true, but i can tell by your picture that you are cought up at the same place i was. Buy the new bellow, it's about 70.00 but it's worth every penny. I tried to get that thing on for 2-3 hours the other night, and got it on in 15min. this time.Didn't even have to use any lube or soap. The new bellow opening was much bigger.

Rowlex, if what he said does not work, you can borrow my alignment tool just to be sure.....
Sounds like he is on to the cure, though......;)

Nope, it was a little hard to get to the hose clamp bolts, but nothing a swivel socket and an extension couldn't handle. Turn the boat all the way to the right and take the big plastic nut off of the water hose and pull it through the swivel housing, then turn it to the left and take the hose clamp off of the back of the exhaust bellow, and the snap ring off of the front(secures it to the swivel housing), and pull it off. Then loosen the hose clamp holding the back of the big bellow on (turning the wheel however is easiest to get to the bolt). Then rip it out and repeat in reverse. It's pretty self explanitory once you get going on it.

Re: omc cobra 5.0 having trouble re-installing stern drive

alright!

The new U-joint bellow fixed the problem wooohooo!! I measured the old one and new one with a caliper, the old one was almost 1/4" smaller then the new one.

I have two more questions:

I put 75w90(i think) gear lube in the outdrive....is that good/recommended/okay?

and is it ok that there is a small amount of in/out play on the prop shaft?

Glad to hear it! I think that's the reccomended lube for the outdrive but i'm not sure. As far as the prop play. i can't remmember ever having one that didn't have some sort of movement. Not much, maybe 1/4 inch at most.

Re: omc cobra 5.0 having trouble re-installing stern drive

I'm not really sure how tight they are supposed to be, i just remember as a kid spinning the props on my dads boats and trying to pull them out. There was always play in them, and there is atleast 1/8th in mine. I also took mine out, and after changing that shift cable, it shifts like a new boat. man what a difference.

Re: omc cobra 5.0 having trouble re-installing stern drive

Read all other replies on reinstalling stern drive and I was kind of hesitant to pull it apart and change the boots. But I did it anyway, on reinstalling I had problems that it would not go all the way in, it stopped at 3/4 inch. Pulled it out twice to check for problem and found out that that is normal and all you have to do is lube the housing on the stern drive that fits up against the U joint boot and pins it up against the inner housing forming a tight seal. I drew it in with the 6 nuts and it is fine. I'm an auto mechanic and whenever I'd put a transmission in there was always a problem if it didn't go in all the way easily. I guess boats are different. I just wanted to pass this tip along.
