Re: OMC Cobra 5.0L EFI Spudder

Hi, my father has been having the same problem on his boat for the last 3 seasons. It is the same 93 OMC 5.0 Cobra Engine. The boat will run fine up to 3500 rpm (less if there is a lot of weight in the boat) However, the engine always runs smooth, from idle to 3500. It just seems to run out of power. We have replaced temp sensors, and had the fuel injectors sent out and cleaned. We are planing on doing the map sensor next but it doesn't seem like there is any point to that. My father has a theory that its the new 10% ethanol gas thats causing these problems, but I'm skeptical. Has anyone successfully fixed this problem?

I've talked to a few people about the code 12 RPM upper limit out of range and found out that the RPM is picked up in the distributor, so this week I plan to try and trouble shoot / verify the RPM signal through out the range...

Re: OMC Cobra 5.0L EFI Spudder

My neighbor and I did some more testing this past weekend after he had discussed the problem w/ a co-worker that has the same engine on his boat. He suggested testing the Neutral Drive switching to ensure that the switch is good. Tested the switch and the wiring to the controller and all was good. He offered to take the controller and let his friend test it out on his boat. (still waiting for the results) But during our tests, the engine reverted back to the limit @ 2500 RPM.

Anyway - I'll report back w/ his result....

No solution yet.....
Turned out that my neighbor's friend had a 5.7 L in his boat, so he coudn't test it.

After talking w/ a friend at work who's a motor head, he jumped on line and did some searching to find out that a common Ford failure is the 'Hall Effect PIP' (pickup) in the distributor. Even though it may look okay and in one piece, they often will fail when vibrations are increaced......
They are replaceable and can be purchased through your local Auto Parts store. I called a NAPA store and they have them for ~$60.00.
So, I'm gonna give it a try this weekend.

Report to follow......

Could be the TFI module that is mounted on the metal bracket by the Throttle body in the Aluminum heat sink. This is a std car part.

Well ---
Time to start thinking about this problem. The snow is melting and the ice is going out.
Anyone figure out the sputtering problem yet ?
