OMC cobra cable adjustment or damage already done?

1988 OMC 3.0L cobra

I had the clunking noise, took it to a mechanic for new cable and adjustment. He replaced. still had clunking noise took it to a better mechanic who knows alot about the cobra. He replaced the cable too (One of them must be pulling the wool over my eyes). Maybe a couple clunks per 2 hours of boating. By the end of summer about 12 to 15 clunks per 2 hours of boating.

Is it possible that the cable has streched and needs additional adjustment or are the gears already gone?

I asked the better mechanic if I continue to run the boat without replacing the gears will additional damage occur to the lower unit. He said run the boat, you can't damage anything more than what has already been damaged. He said to live with the clunking noise until it won't go in forward gear, then replace the gears.

Am I getting good advice?

unless it chips a part off the clutch and feeds it through the pinion and destroys the case. were it mine it would be fixed before it self destructed. usually its cheaper that way.

If the clunk is under load/acceleration,time for gears.Obviously it's getting worse.Maybe your mechanic sells whole gearcases rather than rebuild?

DHP

That sounds very similar to what my 4.3 was doing. The first season we ran it, it would clunk once or twice during 2-4 hrs of running. Not enough to really get my attention at the time (little did I know...).
Then one day (following season) it started clunking once every 5-10 minutes. Knowing things weren't right, I mistakenly let my brother talk me into wakeboarding one more time before taking it to the trailer.

It didn't even get me out of the water before the lower gears let go.

Repairs were right around $800. We got the gear set for $200 which was half price, the rest was labor/shop costs.
