....while turning, and trimming up the drive. It almost sounds like a u-joint or bearing (or two).

There's a constant noise, which is kind of droning. But if I trim it up, or turn the steering, it gets way worse.

Is it a bearing or u-joint? Is a Clymer's manual gonna be helpful?

Thanks for the help......

It could be either or both. Gimbal bearing or U-joints.
Has the drive been pulled and serviced once a year?

Get the real OMC service manual....
Post the year and engine and drive info we can probably find the OEM service manual. Worth its weight in gold for OMC.

I know this seller and have bought many things from him.
If you email him and tell him Gary in NC sent you he may cut you a break on the price or he may have one in used condition for much less...
Its still worth every penny. Its the only book that shows all of the critical shift cable adjustments and specs. Those must be checked every time the drive is pulled and serviced which would be needed every year.
If you plan to keep the boat you won't regret buying the book.

Anytime! Hes a good guy.If he has one cheaper he will help you out.
Still That book covers everything possible on your motor and drive. It has all the wiring diagrams in color and step by step pictures for everything.
OMC boat techs are very hard to find. Most are retired and the newer techs never touched an OMC..
Its best to learn to service it yourself.
What i saved in labor the first service paid for my manual...;)

Re: OMC Cobra makes racket....

While I have found an OMC mechanic, I question his abilities, and am not overly impressed with his $80 an hour work rate.... especially when I've watched him work. For $80 an hour, he better be about 150 lbs, and on a dead run everywhere he goes. I walked into his shop the other day, and he was leaned back in his chair, and taking a nap. I wonder who's boat he's billing this time to. He's never wrong, and quotes at $300, then when you pick up your boat, it's $600.

When I asked a guy at the hardware store about him, he called him the "pilfer-er". Then, another guy walked up to the counter, and said he was "fleeced" by him. I severly doubt that we're the only three around that have been taken by him. But, in this area, if you have "old junk", who are you going to go to? The real problem lies with taking it back twice... after it's supposedly "fixed."

This is why I've bought Clymer's manuals (way better than Seloc) for every piece of junk I've owned. I've been very impressed with their descriptions, as well as the diagrams/pictures. My brother in law was in the process of restoring an older Yamaha motorcycle, and I mentioned to him about a Clymer's. He bought it, and called me to tell me how impressed he was with it. He's an auto-mechanic, and usually consults the original manufacturer's site and manuals.... But he was wowed by the Clymers.

Hopefully your buddy gets back to me... It's not a hurry, as our boating season is about done here. Probably around a month, month and a half away from ice.
