Re: OMC Cobra outdrive removal

Yes it is a drain, there are also two screws on the starboard side as the picture shows, one is a vent and the lower one is the drain, the bushing circled is not actually the plug we're looking for but it's real close, the screw is just a little higher and maybe back an inch. anyhow 2 starboard screws to pull. and one on the port side gets it done.

Re: OMC Cobra outdrive removal

Bruce you're right....that is not my drive...I got those pix somewhere off the net...and the water drain is a little in from that bushing for the bellcrank but they are big screws like the oil drains so it should be obvious...if you tilt it up....I'd take pix of mine but being an old salt water unit it's so ugly I'd be ashamed.....so I crudely corrected the pic....
And yes in pic 2 there is a water drain on the port side of the pivot housing...NOT the bigger screw in the middle of the upper unit...

Re: OMC Cobra outdrive removal

Thanks to all who have replyed Now the question is how do I get the nut out and replaced?
Also I am a little concerned on where the water screws are to remove and drain the water.
I guess it won't mater if I have to remove the lower unit to replace the nut I let drop into the lower unit.
Any one have a how to remove and replace lost nut?

You have to remove the lower unit to get out the retaining plate..it will be in that water passage...for removal instructions and pix see
www.crowleymarine.com
look in product support...OMC Cobra drives....
I built a stand to R+R mine...

while I have the lower unit out should I replace the impeller?
How hard is that process?

Rocket,

You need to start a new thread next time. The original poster's question is now getting lost and forgotten.

Re:Basterd OMC Cobra outdrive removal!

The impeller is easy it right under the tear drop shaped cover of the upper gear housing. After that remove the three bolts, and you are there, at the impeller. I have also removed that screw accidentally before. Welcome to the club, I painted mine red for do not remove, thanks to a post on this site. The bad part is that it is stainless, so a magnet will not work. you will have to remove the out drive and tilt it up until it falls out!

I have tried all the suggestions and my out drive is still stuck, I even ran the motor thinking the vibrations would help, with the six bolts removed, and the tilt fully down against a block of wood overnight.I only ran the motor a few minuets, but left the trim on the wood. It is still stuck. I will not move. I do not know what else to do.
I am out of ideas, please help!
Thanks all,
SS

I would do what the one poster said where you pull it out as far as you can and then push it back in and start over again.

I saw one post where the guy tied the drive to a tree and pulled the trailer with the car. Not suggesting you do it that way but sometimes desperate measures are in order.

Re: OMC Cobra outdrive removal

I have heard of IOs being so badly stuck on that the whole gimble bearing comes out with the drive shaft...which could be the case here...and if so you're going to have to resort to extraordinay means to get it off...but I might see about trying to find a shop to do this for you who has dealt with this before...I use our boat in salt water and I have to do all the maintenance...every year...and everything comes out and comes apart OK...but if I didn't it could be a real nightmare...
Its too bad there is no way to get some Kroil or PB BLaster in there to dissolve some of the rust thats most likely holding it in....
I always give the splines a good coating of OMC Triple guard grease and smear motor oil on the o-rings and also the part of the drive shaft that goes through the gimble...

Ayuh,.... Another Extreme measure is to pull the motor,+ Beat the shaft out with a BFHammer...

That seems to be the only alternative, besides a cutting torch, but it sounds like you weren't able to slide it out enough to even cut it.

Re: OMC Cobra outdrive removal

Thanks for all the ideas. I was able to pull it back in with the nuts, but now It is stuck flush with the Gimbel housing. I thought about trying a come along between a tree and the drive. I was worried about breaking it. Sounds like it will hold up, I will keep on trying and pass on the info.
Thanks again.

I don't know about the cable tree idea, if the angle isn't exactly perfect it's going to stress and break something, you could once again try using the trim rams to your advantage by wedging a wooden block between the pivot housing and the drive at the top and pushing with the rams, if you can even get a little seperation and start driving some wooden door stop like wedges in driving them in around evenly, at this point you should go ahead and just rip, tear, pull the bellows the heck out of there so you can see up in and maybe get some pentrating fluid spray beyond the gimble bearing.

Stand on the drive and bounce on it while having some one operates the tilt rams.

Acuraguy, please note the date of the thread. The problem is 7 months old so your suggestion is probably a bit late.
