Hi, My name is JOHN MOORE and I have an ongoing problem with my OMC Cobra 5.0L. If you could take a few minutes to read this and respond, I would really appreciate it.

The OMC Cobra outdrive is factory equipment on my 1992 Four Winns Horizon 190. The boat starts and runs great for a short time but soon develops a mysterious problem.

The RPM's will slowly drop from full throttle after the boat warms up. The motor sounds a little throatier and feels to be starving for fuel when this occurs. If I put it into neutral, I can rev it up to higher RPM's, but the minute I engage the outdrive it stalls.

The boat will eventually move by feathering the throttle, but it wants to continue to stall out. Gradually it will build up RPM's slightly but nothing above 3,000 & it rides really rough.

Like I said the engine runs and starts great, just when you put a load on it after it warms up am I experiencing the problem. It is not overheating and I changed the thermostat to be sure.

Do you think I should replace the water fuel separator filter? or Fuel Pump itself? Any thoughts would be greatly appreciated. The engine overheating has been eliminated as a cause and the water pump is good. ???????????HELP

John...one thing to check since you mention fuel starvation is the fuel tank vent, if it's plugged then no air can get into the tank and it will develop a vacumn that the fuel pump will have a hard time trying to overcome, a quick way to check this is when you are having the problem undo the fuel filler cap which will allow air into the tank, if that fixes it then you have to see whats wrong with the vent line....good luck!

Re: OMC Cobra Problem HELP!

As the engine "starves" for fuel, shoot a little starting fluid into/down the carb throats. If it picks up, that will mean it is now, momentarly running with the fuel you provided, and therefore you are having fuel problems. If it dies/bogs with the straring fuel, then you are flooding it and your carb/fuel system is not the problem. Connect a outboard fuel tank with primer bulb to the fuel fitting after the fuel pump. If it runs OK. with you as the manual fuel pump, then that's where the problem is, the pump!! If the problem persists, the "fuel" problem is still with the carb, IF it's fuel problem!!!

Re: OMC Cobra Problem HELP!

I just purchased an 86 EbbTide with 4.3L OMC. Right after we hit the open water and I openned it up, the engine would die down to an almost stall and act like it was starving for gas, or flooding. I am currently in the process of changing the gas filters, sparkplugs, plug wires, distributor cap and tune up kit ( rotor, condenser and points. I am hopeful that this will solve it. But i am open to other possibilites.

Re: OMC Cobra Problem HELP!

Well yesterday was the first day this season my boat hasn't fouled up. I took some of your advice and it seems to have paid off.

I first took off the water/fuel separator filter and dumped out the water. The filter I bought did not fit so I put the old one back on. (It was full of water)

I also took apart the gas tank breather located on the starboard stern swim deck. I blew through the hole and could hear the gas bubble in the tank.

I then took the boat out and had at least two hours of wide open fun. No problems what so ever! Lets hope this will hold up thanks to all who replied! JOHN
