I am trying to remove my stern drive on a 87 omc cobra w/4.3. My manuel (seloc) says to remove the 3 locknuts on both sides than slide the unit back a few inches than clear the drive shaft from gimbel housing but it won't slide back but 1/4 inch or so. I have her in nuetral as suggested. Am I not pulling hard enough Thanks for any info

Have not used the prying method yet but that was my next move. I hate doing it. Thanks Sea Wolf

I keep pulling and pulling even a little prying. And still nada, maybe another teenth. Could the end of the drive shaft be stuck in. just ran it 3 days ago and noticed a rumbling. I'm trying to get to my u-joints and gimble bearing. Can't get past the simplist of tasks according to my manuel

The outdrive is heavy! If you do not have some means of supporting it or some help, you may be binding on the splines of the driveshaft.
When removing mine, I put a block of wood under the skeg, than raise the trailer jack until the skeg is resting on that block. You can then balance the unit and rock it towards the rear. It also allows me to reinstall it by rocking the unit towards the boat. It has never really been a problem to remove or install. The only area of concern has been getting the driveshaft started correctly when putting the unit back on. Not difficult, but requires some attention.

Charles

Lower the front of the boat so the drive when it is all the way in down position will not hit the ground. Assuming you have everything unbolted , lift the drive up a little & Let Go!!! It should break free, if it does not try again till it does, use common sense on how far to drop it . I wouldnt raise it as far as it will go up and drop it.This is how i removed mine , got my information from here & it worked. One other thing i thought of to some it may be Heavy but i was able to lift mine with no trouble taking off & putting back on, OMC King Cobra ...Good Luck

Re: omc cobra problem removing upper

I done some research & if im correct it is a Thrust type bearing, it has a inner & outer race.
I just redone my outdrive & found what i think was the best deal at a website, not sure if i can post it here but i got the gasket kit, gimbal bearing, drive shaft o rings, water outlet o ring exhaust bellow & u joint bellow for &89.95 + tax. but you need to also order the drive shaft oil seal, also the u joints if you need them, if not grease them while you have the drive off. here is the site hope it ok to do this.. you can see the gimbal bearing here...http://www.sterndrive.info/id6.html

Thanks Pt I too saw that whole kit but wasn't quite sure what was in it It really didn't give a complete parts list but now I know. I will do my u-joints and am shocked that kit doesn't have the shaft seal. Oh well Thanks again
