I have a 1992 sunbird corsair 185, and my problem is that when I shift into forward or reverse the motor sarts to bog. I can get it to run fine if I put in in and out of gear a few times. It idles fine, and it will idle in forward or reverse, but bogs when I try to apply more throttle. Please help?

Change the lower shift cable. It's corroded and stiff operating and activating the ESA system and cutting out half the cylinders spark. You will need the OEM service manual to do the job correctly and get it adjusted.

I have changed the lower shift cable and the problem still exists. When I disconnect the esa it works fine, so I replaced the esa. Still doesn't work right. Don't know what to do next.

Re: OMC cobra problem when putting in gear

Watch the shift actuator while shifting neutral to forward then back to neutral, the actuator lever (triangle shape with the notches) should engage the esa and then settle back to it's normal position after each shift, wheather it be neutral forward or reverse the esa actuater will spring return to it's at rest position once the shift is made, if the cable is too stiff it dampens the ability of the lever to return home, thus triggering the esa and killing half your motor.

If you are engageing the shift interrupt when already in gear, just giving more throttle, you may have a bent or incorrectly installed centering spring on the remote shift plate which is allowing the accuator to move too easily.
