Re: omc cobra shifting problem

The Hastings website will really help you understand the problems and solutions.
I suggest that if you have never worked on a sterndrive before, to see if you can find a shop that knows OMCs, and is familar with the Cobra problems. That's what I did, and I am glad I did so, it shifts well now, and I will bring it to them before each season so all the adjustments can be checked out.

Well to do that you need to remove the drive. Only 6 nuts but it is heavy.

Re: omc cobra shifting problem

km1990
The way I did mine was raised the bow of trailer up.Let the drive tilt down on a piece of plywood.Remove the drive end of the rams on either side of drive.Support the rams with a pice of wire or something so they don't drop down all the way.Undo the 6 lock nuts,3 on either side of drive. Now you want the skeg supported on that piece of plywood.Grad hold of the drive and start working it back,be careful of drive shaft droping down.I made me a little stand to set mine in after I got it out.I did mine by myself.Once you get drive off and out of way you will see the stub sticking out that the cable is attached to.There is a belcrank there that moves the shift rod. When you start this have your drive in nutral,it is not like a merc.
If you have a manual,it tells all of this. This is how you get to the adjustment.Mind you this drive is very critical of the adjustment.Get it wrong, and you are buying gears. When I say wrong there is a plus or minus of 1/32 of a inch on the adjustment.Hope this helps.
