I just bought a 1993 Marlin with an OMC Cobra Stern Drive, I would like to replace the gear oil but I'm not sure what kind it takes.
I opened the lower gear case and it the oil seammed pretty burned (Black).

First, purchase a manual. It takes Lower Unit Gear Oil available at NAPA or better parts stores.

Oil being black is better than being milky and water contaminated.

Bob

Re: OMC Cobra Stern Drive Gear oil

Thanks Bob_VT,
Yes I agree with the color/state of the oil, I had an evenrude boat before with a leak on the seal and wasa nothing but milky oil.
My concerns though (manual is in the mail) is the type of oil for the OMC cobra.
I bought a couple of quarts which states that are for the "new" OMC types, but I just wnated to make sure what I put in there. (this oil is an 80-90 wt.) for lower gear.

Re: OMC Cobra Stern Drive Gear oil

gustavo_m....I have had twin Cobra's for the last 10 years and have put nothing but OMC Cobra Hi Vis gear lube in. The OMC dealers here in Canada all carry it. It may cost a few dollars more than oil from an auto store but it gives me piece of mind and I only change it once a year.
