Of course it won't spark if they aren't set right. The book gives you a point gap setting for initial setting so you can get it started, and a dwell setting used to fine adjust the point gap to get it just right.
Then, after the dwell is set the timing has to be set as changes in dwell changes the timing.

I know I was stating the obvious but how do you crank the engine by hand so you can get the dwell angle just right prior to setting the points gap.I have tried turning the fan belt but it just slips.

You can't do it that way, you have to check the dwell with the engine running. If it's off, you open or close the points a little to change the dwell.
Dwell is the angle (in degrees) the points are closed between the cam lobes in the distributor.
Depending on the type dwell meter you have, I just hook it up and crank the engine over with a Remote Starter while the cap and rotor are off and adjust the dwell. On my meter, I usually have to add a few degrees of dwell while setting the points when cranking, which usually gets it just right when actually running.
It's a trial and error thing.

So you think that may be the problem? Unfortunately I am a novice when it comes to engine problems, though I am learning quickly.I do not have any of the equipment you have mentioned and I have been running a trial and error system with the points, but to date no joy.Think I will have to get an engineer tolook at it.Thanks for your advice really appreciate it.Think may opt for petronix ignition next season. :confused:Just out of interest on the dashboard of my 4WINNS, there is a toggle switch with the letters ACC written underneath.Any ideas?
