omc cobra stuck in forward

just bought a four winns 215 with 5.0 engine last wednesday, all seemed well when I gassed up and took my kids for a spin. Used neutral and reverse to get to the dock. When we got back to the dock, the boat was stuck in forward and i can't get neutral or reverse. Also it starts when in gear. anyone have any ideas. The boat had a new low end 2 years ago as well

Probably broken shift cable.

don't think so, as when I move the shift control I can see the mechanicals on the engine move back and forth, not that I know much about this though<br /><br />any othe ideas?

Woooo, Sounds Like your pulling the Lower end out there. I would take the Stern drive off ( might be A bit difficult with it not going to nuetral ) and see where abouts its hanging up. Is this a Cobra Drive ?

Could still be the lower shift cable, you have one cable going from the control to the shift bracket on the enginre, this is what you see moving when you move the control however there is another cable going from there down to the drive itself, check that.

as an FYI to all, found the problem, the adjusting bolt on the transom cable had jumped out of its retainer and so the cable was flopping around freely, probably explains the starting in gear as well, as the rest of the system would think it was out of gear. Either a harry homeowner fix or a lousy design, the only thing holding it in was a cotter pin acting as a stop and it had been bent to 90 degrees so the barrel bolt just fell out
