I have a 1989 Fourwinns Freedom 170 17" ski boat with a OMC Cobra TKO 4 2.3 Liter engine. I had it out for a couple of days a week ago tubbing and the boat was running good. When I took it out last weekend, it started alright and the motor would rev up good but when we got out on the lake, I could push the throttle wide open and the engine would really bog down. I could run the boat at very slow speeds with no problem but when I tried to speed up, the engine would bog down. Any idea's?

Sounds like a fuel problem.. $250 should fix it.

grippsters,

It could be several things.

Fuel:

1. Locate and replace the fuel filter(s). It may have a fuel/water seperator (looks like an oil filter)that will be mounted somewhere near, usually not on, the engine. Replace that too.

2. Does it make a difference if you leave the fuel filler cap loose? If so, you have a clogged fuel tank vent line.

3. Is the accelerator pump on the carb. working. Can you see a small jet of fuel being squirted into the carb. throat when the accelerator is "goosed". Do this on land, running on muffs, with the flame arrestor (air cleaner) removed. BE CAREFUL. It may backfire. Keep your head back a good distance and keep a fire extinguisher at arms length.
You can also check this with the engine off, just after shut down. THat method is much safer.

Timing:

1. Check the timing.

2. If it is a 2.3L four cylinder Ford, the timing belt may have jumped.
