I have a problem ( I think) with a hole in the upper unit. On each side is a OMC round sticker or symbel. On the port side the sticker is missing leaving a hole. A local guy said that is a casting hole. What goes in there? Its not threaded so I am assuming a rubber stopper of some sort. Cant find the name, part number or how to get it. The service guy is looking into it but its a 1987 OMC Cobra 5.0 liter so old! He says the engine will over heat if left open. Can anyone here help?

Howdy,

Did you just buy this boat or did the hole just magically appear?

Someone has removed the "NEVER REMOVE" screw.

You'll need to find the screw (did you remove it?) and remove the drive so you can get in there and put it back on.

There's a "nut-plate' probably that fell off on the inside that can be used to secure the screw.

You can look up parts at http://epc.brp.com but I didn't see the screw listed. They show the "Medallion" but I didn't see the screw. It's not mentioned in any service manual and I suspect that you will not be able to buy it from any dealer except a junkyard or "Midnight Parts Supply";)!!

Since there's no reason to ever remove it, you could plug the hole with any suitable screw. then cover the screw with JB weld so someone else is not tempted to try to remove it!!

Regards,

Rick

Thanks Rick. I did see a thread on this from earlier. The boat is parked out on my street so someone can and removed it. How hadrs is removing the cover and replacing the part?

Well, if you can actually buy those parts RandyJ posted, you'll need to pull the drive to install them.

Since you're going to do that you should inspect your bellows, U-joints, gimbal bearing and check the alignment while you're at it.

If the "service guy" is going to change the drive lubricant, YOU need to ensure that he does it in accordance with the OMC service manual. If it's filled like a Mercruiser, it will destroy it.

Re: OMC Cobra upper unit hole

Let me save you a lot of time, money, and frustration.
I had the same thing happen.
I fixed this for $3.75

That hole is along the porting that takes water from the lower unit into your engine for cooling.
If you run your engine with that hole open, the water will pour out that hole, and never get to your engine, causing an overheat.
I went to a local marine store, and purchased a rubber stopper with a brass mechanism for tightening it. It works perfect, and has for over a year. We use our boat a lot.

The part I purchased was a 1" "SeaChoice "Twist Type Plug" Brass with Neoprene Seal".
This is right off of the label. I purchased an extra as a backup.

Later, when I removed the outdrive, I found the backing that held the bolt and label over that hole.

So, you do have a piece of metal in your cooling port, but it is small compared to the port.
Will it cause problems later? I don't know. You can remove the outdrive and easily find the piece.

Good Luck!

delete this if i'm too far out of bounds (hijack)
my outdrive seems to have this (compleatly stopped water flow to the engine) issue.
can't get water thru the outdrive to the engine. i have another current post about it but not getting any answers and it seems people on this post know of this issue.

compleatly blocked water passage in upper gearcase in out drive?

Rick, I don't think he should do that. He has top remove the drive and get the nut out that fell off or he will have big problems.
