Just purchased a 1986 4 Winns with a 3.0 Cobra drive.
While trying to run it on muffs in the driveway, it was over heating due to lack of water flow, so I pulled off the impeller housing to take a look.
The impeller was in good shape, but when I turned the hose on, there wasn't any water getting up to the pump. It seems that the muffs, which work well on my outboard, didn't press hard enough against the outdrive to seal well enough to push the water up to the pump, so I went out and bought a different style which sealed better.
I started the engine and everything seemed fine, except that water was spraying from a small hole about .060 diameter in the back of the plastic impeller housing. It sounds funny, but my question is whether or not the hole is supposed to be there. It's such a perfectly round hole, that it looks like it's molded that way, possibly to bleed air out or something. Anyway, it pumps enough water up to the engine to keep things cool, but since I'll be near the dealer tomorrow, I can replace the housing if necessary.
Please let me know if this thing is supposed to bleed (spray) or not
Thanks, John
