That drive should be pulled every year or so to inspect the U-joints and drive bellows for water intrusion. It appears that it may not have been done in a long time. Inspecting each year helps prevent the very problems you're having now since you catch them before they cause damage.

Also,

You have yourself a boat with an engine/drive combination that is made by a company that went out of business about 10 years ago. That doesn't mean it's not supported but it does mean that support is becoming quite limited as time goes on.

Sorry about that,

The biggest issue he has is not parts support - that won't be an issue for years. The big issue is maintenance and what's in need of repair.

You mentioned you and your buddy aren't mechanics - with that in mind, I'd recommend you get a full transom service done by a marina and just pay the $350 or so. Have it inspected while they're in there, and give us a run-down of the inspection report and we'll help you understand what's critical and what you can do yourself.

Your mistake wasn't getting the Cobra, it was buying a boat that hadn't been maintained. Cobras work just fine and parts are available. I hope your local marina can service them. Some won't/can't. That's a big deal, but not all that different from buying an Audi in a town without a dealer.

No worries, though. I did it, too, though I just had my "mistake" out tonight for a few hours and aside from the massive debt the repairs cost, I was in pretty good spirits ;) Haha.

Any shop can do the transom service. The procedure for changing out the gimbal bearing, etc. is not much different than doin' it on a Merc. The problem he is going to have is finding a mechanic that knows what he's doing as far as the shift system adjustments on his Cobra.
