I have a single lever OMC control box, my evinrude 40hp 1984 would not go into reverse, after advise from you guys I have finally adjusted the cable to allow it to engage, (not tried in water yet), my question is what is the significance of the detent when the lever is moved from neutral to either forward or reverse positions? should the engine be in gear at this point? thank you for any help. Right. The detent means the transmission should be in gear, either forward or reverse. And the throttle should not start to move until the lever is moved PAST the detent point.

Be careful when shifting with the motor off because without the motor running, the dogs in the lower unit may not mate up properly. Simply turning the prop by hand when shifting into gear will prevent that. (this often requires an arm span of 12 foot or more or the help of a friend)

Take the cowl off the engine and watch the two cables as you move the lever. Remember, you have one lever doing two things (throttle and shift). As you move the lever forward or backward from neutral, one cable must first shift the lower unit into gear (forward or reverse). As you continue to move the lever, the other cable begins to move which applies throttle.

Also , if you don't know.

The worst thing you can do is e e e e a se it into gear.

You need to more or less , snap it into gear, for lack of a better description.

This is both for fwd. and revrs.

Any other way , can lead to , gear case repairs/ worn clutch dog .

Just in case you weren't aware.

Good- Luck,
