Re: omc dipstick length

If thats a factory marine engine......With filter change (long filter) the engine should hold 5.4-5.5 quarts of oil.

Let it drip dry again like you did, replace the filter, pour in 4.3 to 4.4 quarts, run the enging then shut it down, let stand 10-15 minutes, check stick and mark level with a file, add 1 more quart, let stand a couple minutes, check level, and mark new level with file. Now you have a new addlevel and a new full level marked on your stick. You will be just fine.

Re: omc dipstick length

measured oilpan on dissassembled dodge 340 in shop, almost identical, filled with 5 qts and measured; it was still below windage tray level. transferred that to boat(3.5" from top. about where I am showing too full on boat. looked harder, and dipstick has part # and says 10w30-omc only wants straight 30w. I think this stick is out of the corvette engine that I had replaced with marine jasper. So, the boat has 3 hours on it, 2.5 qts low on oil; not happy, but kept 50# pressure always. Going to gm dealer tues, and check part # . thx

Re: omc dipstick length

GM does not mount dipstick tubes to the bottom of the oil pan. That is a factoury modification by Mercruiser, Volvo Penta, or OMC only. Going to GM will be of NO HELP to you.

If you don't feel safe filling as I outlined for you, go to the marine dealer an purchase a complete new tube and stick assembly and install it.

lol, installing new tube, by feel, is what I'm trying to avoid. only an over-stretched arm can even get to the plug...

I boat on the Upper Chesapeake Bay.

When I get home I can check my manuals for a part number if you are still looking for it.

lol, dhp; paranoid, as this first i/o for me. have learned so much from this board, almost comfortable with it now(old auto mech). Talked to old omc tech that teaches me; he said wrong dipstick(I let wife and sons on boat without me-don't need file marks, which, even if explained, in one ear.....

dhp; know more than the tech that screwed this operation up, just by scrolling previous in this board- this is where to learn!

Re: omc dipstick length

ok, here is update; bought an omc dipstick, too long. Sucked out, and drained dipstick tube again. Then refilled and used an etcher to mark original dipstick, just like everyone told me to ;)

No.....The hole steps down in size.

An automotive tube and stick would not work anyway, the exhaust manifold will interfere. :%

You have to buy the dipstick that is matched up to the correct tube. Various years have various length tubes.

Re: omc dipstick length

I have the dipstick and tube out of my 1987 Merc. 5.7L. The tube is 36" long and from the bottom of tube to the stop (where the tube seats into the block) is 12". The dipstick is 33-1/4" long. From tip,1-1/2" to "ADD" mark, and 2-1/4" to "FULL" mark. Part # on stick is 15297. The tube goes to the bottom of my pan and I can suck darn near all the oil out. Hope that helps.

Re: omc dipstick length

I took a look at my pan while removing the battery the other day and you can disregard the measurements I gave you. My oil pan has a regular plug and the tube enters the pan on the port side of the engine. Sorry for the bad info. I only have the owner-operator manual for your model and the only part number it lists is for the oil filter, none for the dipstick.

Coors,

Does the end of your tube where you insert the dipstick have the garden hose threads on it? If not, you don't have the original dipstick tube.

My tube is 32" long, with the garden hose attachment, but it must not be an '88 model

Re: omc dipstick length

Been awhile since I had my Cobra...I recall that the OMC part number was on the dipstick. If it is, you should be able to see what year/engine the dipstick is for.

If you use a pump that attatches to that garden hose fitting, you should be able to get all of the oil out since the dipstick tube connects to the drain hole in the bottom of the pan.

Any lengths of dipsticks that aren't OMC don't do you any good since the dipstick tube length is unique to the OMC.
