I have an 86 GM 5 litre with a stringer outdrive, I think that is what it is large circular booty at drive, I think it may be an 800.

Only have tilt switch on dash, just moves it up and down, drive goes down just fine, coming up is the problem only moves up about halfway. Wondring what this problem could be?? Also what oil to put in tilt drive and where is the fitting to add oil? Do not see any zerk fittings to grease are there any?
I appreciate any help on identifying problem and correctly identifying this drivem boat is a Bayliner Capri 1986,

30 wt motor oil. I had the same problem with mine. I had to get a new gasket for the clutch pack housing, well I coldn't find one and had to cut my own. It could also be a weak electric motor (on the inside on mounted to the intermediate housing, bad solenoid, or clutch pack. Check the voltage at the motor on the way up. if you undo the cover on the clutch pack or remove the electric motor (it should have two bolts on each side), make sure the outdrive is down, if not it will be!!! Don't ask me how I know. It could also be a bad or broken hammer blow coupling.

I had very similar problem while restoring my '76 235 HP. Motor and hammer coupling were fine. Mine went right down like a rock, but struggled coming up.

Clutch was weak. The manual claims that you should have to exert so many foot pounds via a torque wrench ( I do not remember what the actual value was off hand) at the drive gear and it should slip. It's a safety issue if you should hit something, it should take x amount of force to push the drive up.

I was able to raise mine the rest of the way by hand, so I knew it was weak. I opened mine up and turned a new thrustwasher on my metal lathe, but new ones are available.

Mine flies right up and down now.

Besides stores on Iboats, I have had alot of luck finding parts for older OMC stringers at Go2Marine.

Good Luck
