omc electric shift lower unit wont go forward

just got this 20 ft.deck boat 4cyl gm engine 120 to 155 hp omc lever control electric shift.i been told its a 1968 or older.someone put 80 to 90 wt. gear oil in the lower unit.i put omc premium electric oil back in it but still wont go forward.i do have current & connection in the wire that goes down into the foot of lower unit.reverse & neutral are fine.my next plan is to go into the foot & hope i can see what is the problem.hope i will be able to find the parts.i will probably tear up more than i fix.please let me know what else to check before screw up.your advice will be very much appreciated.THANKS FATS!

I've only messed witha few of those, maybe someone else can help too. If you have current to it, you must because of having 2 gears, next step will be removal of your drive. From what i remember, shift cylinders are the leading problem in those, but thats usually when theres no shift at all, so you may get lucky. Only one way to find out, and thats tear it apart. Get a manual, well worth the price! Parts are hard to come by, used stuff has been all used up! Good luck!

Yo, Senor Fats,<br />My '76 'rude USE to have one of those electro-shift l/u's but the guy I bought the engine from was a real wrench's wrench. He s**t-canned all of that stuff and up-dated the l/u to a '93 or so. Like Mike M2 said ain't no parts for what ya got so you might find a mech who can retrofit new shift stuff in yours.
