omc electric shift not fully engaging?

I have a 1974 omc electric shift with a gm v-6. I took it to the lake for the first time when shifting it into reversed it took off fast. I believe the idle was way to high. I later tried to shift it into forward heard light click boat would only go about 2 mph at idle and even at higher rpms. It does the same thing when I shift it into reverse. Does anyone have any ideas of what I can do to fix this problem.

There's an internal solenoid in the lower unit - it could be going bad. Other than something in the shift mechanism itself I can't think of the causes. Someone will come along shortly with a more detailed answer.

You say it shift forward and reverse? If yes than look at the ball gears they spinning? If no? You over heating? If yes than stripped, water pump shaft. Or coupler, or drive shaft.

When was last time you changed impeller? Know how?

1- Check the water pump shaft. If good.

2- Pull the outdrive, pull shaft, ball gear coming out of the rear of the boat.If shaft is stripped, new shaft or used. I have 2 useless to me.

Post results i'll try to help you after you post results.

Before you start tearing things apart like Chiefalen wants you to do, check the voltage at the shift wires going into the drive. Might as well start with the easy things first.

Also...never ever shift an electric shift OMC at high RPMs. You will damage the shift springs.

What I want is to help the guy.

He posted it goes into gear, forward and reverse.

Does it overheat?

It ether shifts into gear or not.

The boat goes 2 miles a hour. Can't be a spun prop its a pin that holds the prop he wouldn't move at all.

Conclusion: My free advise sell that boat. Get a volvo setup.

Yeah...I want to help the guy too...help him not tear apart his drive if he doesn't need it torn apart. This could easily be a case where the magnets(not solenoids) are not being driven with enough current.

Do you have the correct lube in the gear case? OMC elec. will not run with the wrong lube.

Yes, I do have the right lube I was very careful about finding what kind of fluid before I replaced it.

I'm not sure if it is overheating I only ran boat about 10 min. and temp light did not come on in that short of time. It does go into foward and into reverse.

Re: omc electric shift not fully engaging?

I was doing some of the checks that all of you were telling my and some found on simular link. I put the boat in gear with engine off and tried to rotate the prop forward and reverse. I noticed the nose cone not moving but prop moving(stiff but able to rotate). I removed the cone, pin and prop. I found a bunch of burnt smelling and sticky rubber. I also pushed on the center of prop and the center can be pushed out and the rubber is all tacky. I think it is not suppose to be like that. Do I need another prop or is there possibly more wrong than that.

Sounds like a bad prop.

Re: omc electric shift not fully engaging?

I found a friend at work that has the same out drive. I'm going to barrow his prop this weekend and put a tac in this week and adjust the idle to specs and see how she does thanks for your help. I will let you know how it went.
