I have asked both of these questions before worded differently" but no one offered a answer beside get the book that I have and it is no help

1, how do i flush the outdrive it has no inlets on the sides there is one on the bottom above the propeller is that where I run fresh water in and should it be in gear when it is flushed ?

2, she gets up on plane at around 2.5k and at 3.5k goes about 30mph what is the max RPM I should try for to achive WOT ?

3, tilt motor needs a little tap to get it to move up or down seems it will need to be rebuilt or replaced soon not much room to get to it what would be the best way to get in there to address the issue.

thanks for any and all replays.....

1. Add a flush adapter. It bolts on in place of an existing trunnion cap. I'm told you can also put a hose in at the water pickup from underneath.

2. 4600-4800

3.Brushes worn out, replace them or motor. Reach in there with ?" socket on an extension.

Re: OMC eletric shift 120hp questions

hey snotrocket, sounds like we have similar boats - mine is a 69 K&C Thermoglass 17.5' bowrider trihull with the 120hp OMC electricshift. I may finally get mine in the water this weekend, after 2 years working on it (bought it with badly rotted transom and engine mounts - redid them all myself)

I had just heard about the trunnion cap adapter that wire2 mentioned - parts like that are not easily obtainable in my neck of the woods so I am going to drill, tap and put in my own adapter in one of my caps as was suggested to me.

Neither my tilt or trim motors worked - removed them both, cleaned them up and now they work very well. I don't what your configuation is but for the tilt motor I was able to get a wrench on the bolts to take them out. The bolts are on the outside end of the motor, go right through the motor and into the housing. After i got it off though, the front of the tilt motor was stuck in the housing because someone sealed it with 3m 5200 sealant and I could not get it off. I ended up removing the lag screws holding the engine mount to the bed and propped the engine up on a 2x4 going across under the oil pan. this allowed me to remove the whole front motor mount/tilt assembly and work on it on the bench. (still couldn't get the front cover for the motor off though -3M sez the 5200 is permanent and they MEAN IT!)

wire2 - no disrespect intended but is that wot rpm figure from an owners manual? Just asking because I've never driven this boat before and will be watching the gauges very closely..... thanks.

No need to put in gear to flush the drive. What year is the motor and out drive?

What knid of book do you have that does not even have WOT RPMS?

You do not have water input holes below the cavation plate and above the prop Shaft?

120 HP in the years I know are 4200 to 4600 WOT RPMS.

Re: OMC eletric shift 120hp questions

Go to Ebay. Saw 4 or 5 seperate listings for Flush Adapters yesterday. If your Outdrive is 1977 or older that hole under the Rudder or Cavitation Plate is where you stick a hose, turn on the water, start and idle the engine. Do not engage the propeller nor take it above idle. Keep an eye on the hose in case it comes out. Flush Adapter is much better. If the Manual you are referring is not an OEM OMC Service Manual, I suggest you get one. They can be found on Ebay also.

None taken. I was generalizing, may have been a bit high. So many factors affect wot rpm; gear ratio, prop pitch, load in boat, hull condition, chop on water, etc., makes it difficult to pin down exactly.

Re: OMC eletric shift 120hp questions

Hi,

Newly joined, but frequent reader.

I can help you out, as I am looking at the original OMC user manual that I rec'd with my 1975 19' MFG Caprice bow rider with a 165hp Electric Shift Stringer. I have the specs for the 120, 140, 165, 175/190/235, 225, and 245HP motors here.

WOT for the 120HP is 4000-4400 RPM

Tilt motor: I'm on the 3rd one :) The first was the boats original and was toast. The second was water damaged when my brother-in-law neglected to leave the bilge pump switch on. Like other, it took a whack of a hammer to get it to work, and then eventually seized up.

Re: OMC eletric shift 120hp questions

thanks gryhnd - its good to know the rpm 'neighborhood' that I should play in. considering the boat is 38 yrs old I think I'll keep it to the lower end of that range.

Re: OMC eletric shift 120hp questions

I have a whole stern unit of that type for sale, I am going to put it on e-bay this week. Everything works good but am stripping the hull out. To much rot. Is from a 1969 evenrude explorer w/155 hp v-6. Tilt and electric shift work wonderfully...I even have the flush adapter mounted to it and 2 props of the "pin" style for it.
