1989 OMC Cobra 5.7

My port side engine will ocassionally sputter out and shut off, only at idle speed. I runs fine at any/all RPM above idle, but when I'm navigating back through the marina, is will "sometimes" just sputter out. I have NO excelleration problem or any trouble while underway.

I'm thinking either a fuel pump or choke problem, but don't really know how to verify. (or if theres anohter possibility). Fuel is no more than 1 month old. I did change the filter at the carb, but have not change the water seperator yet (thats next). I DID just install a new ESA module on that engine, and thats when it seemed to start happening. I did disconnect it to troubleshoot, but got the same results, so thats not the problem. I checked the timing and it's correct for marine fuel.. although I'm still running land gas through the right now (because I fill her up on land before I launch each spring)

I have not done points/roter/cap plugs/wires yet either.

Suggestions?

Ya re-check the ESA. The modules are RPM governed. At somewhere between 1000&1500 RPM they are locked out and no longer affect the ignition circuit....hence the no problem underway. Verify the switch adjustment, see it is operating correctly.

I already disconnected the new ESA, and had the same problem (essentially eliminating the ESA as a potential problem).

Verify the state of tune. Start with the dwell and condition of the points.
Does it start right back up?

(sorry for the long delay..)

Yes, it starts right back up immediately without any problem. I am going to replace the points/rotor/cap this week.
