Just came across a good manifold for my OMC 2.3 engine for $200... I know this part is absolete, but do they ever break or get damaged? Just not sure if I should buy one to keep as a spare... I will be keeping my boat for at least 4 -5 years. What do you guys think

Good to have around. If you never use it sell it after your boat is gone

Definitely pick up the spare. If it is used, inspect it thoroughly for cracks especially if has been repainted.

So do they actually break? What does break in them? On the pictures it does not look repainted, just light coat of rust... Do they get rusted through? It feels it is a little to thick to rust right through or it is a matter of good / bad winterization?

Also should I get an elbow part too or just manifold?

two enemies of exhaust manifolds like yours:
1. lake water through unpainted cast iron.... leave an old engine block out in the rain for 30 years and see what you have left (10 years is all OMC ever designed any exhaust manifold to last)
2. ice - frozen water breaks the water jackets withing the manifold.

Yes buy it. After you inspect it,make sure the passages aren't all rotted away?
Same with the riser.

Re: OMC Exhaust Manifold Question

They are obsolete. You can still find aftermarket manifolds for the old marine Chevy motors, but I havent heard of anyone making aftermarket manifolds for Ford. Just take a quick google search of the OEM manifold part number of your current one and see what Im talking about. If I have your part no. correct, 986041, there are only used options out there ranging from $700-$1000 used. Here are some pictures of my old manifolds off my OMC 260(5.7L Chevy 350 V8) as an example of what can happen to old manifolds and risers only used in fresh water after 30+years:

Cleaned up the surface with a wire brush, but look at all that blockage.

That Ford/OMC combo was only use a couple of years.
No one makes a replacement.Even OSCO doesn't.
Nivekt. Looks like you got your moneys worth out of those manifolds.

Re: OMC Exhaust Manifold Question

Just paid for it. I will perform a leak test on it as soon as it gets here. If it is good I want to powder coat it so it won't be old and rusty anymore... Do you guys know if it is possible to polish it inside? Also, is it actually worth polishing it?

So what would you charge for it?

Supply and demand! He can ask whatever he wants and you don't have to buy them...your choice!

Re: OMC Exhaust Manifold Question

You do not want to polish the inside of an intake manifold. The rough edge actually helps to keep the gas atomized in the air mixture thru turbulence. Polishing the exhaust side is ok as that creates a smoother flow out. And can actually help vacate the cylinders faster, which helps with the intake and exhaust overlap.
