Kind of a two part question:

Hope someone can help me out, i just replaced the two cables on my 89 evinrude 110hp with standard omc side mount shifter. For some reason my fast idle lever keeps popping up when i shift into forward it also does this in reverse??

I don't know if its related however when i first start the motor i have to manually make sure the idle srew is pressed firmly against the stop.If not the thing starts up and its running at like 3000 rpm until i push the idle screw against the stop. After i have done that and i shift it forward or reverse i cannot get it to hold against the idle stop unless i manually push it there.

Any thoughts??

Your throttle cable is adjusted too tight at the engine. This is keeping pressure applied at the control box.

Joe-I have read the evinrude shop manual at it makes no mention of the correct setting of the tension knob,Is there a certain setting for the tension on the control, the little black knob?Like three turns clockwise or counter-clockwise to loosen? Then back off the throttle at the engine with the little black knob on the cable?Should i adjust the engine side first then the tension on the control? Basically how do you get the cable to be just right so i have just enough pull but not to much.
Thanks in Advance

It's nothing to do with the tension knob, as Joe said it's the throttle cable.
Check your manual again it should be in the Remote Control section under Shift Cable Installation.
The adjustment is made at the motor and there is a full page on how to adjust it properly.

Fed-The tension knob is not explained very well at all.I was simply asking if there is a correct procedure here with the tension knob as it relates to the throttle. Thanks for your comments Fed

The tension knob on the control box is simply to keep the throttle from creeping due to viberation when the boat is underway. Just set the throttle tension to a point whereas the movement when pressure is applied suits you BUT will not move by itself when underway.

Without it, you would find yourself constantly holding onto the throttle when cruising.

Hey Joe- Thanks so much, now i understand!! It takes the slack out of the line is what your saying.

Update:I backed off the wheel at the throttle and it worked perfectly its much easier to shift in Forward and Reverse. Thanks!! However now i am having a problem where i shift to full throttle and when i bring the control back to neutral the idle screw is about 3/4 inch off from the plate, this results in a higher idle.Currently i can only move the idle screw next to the stop manually,it will not return to the stop unless i either move it manually or tighten the heck out of the throttle cable which results in hard shifting and my original problem of popping up the fast idle lever.I am currently wondering if the spark advance is not holding its tension or something?? Confused??

Look at the vertical throttle lever on the port side of the powerhead. There is a mechanical idle stop screw near the middle of that lever that touches the block when at an idle. Back that screw out and away so that it is not touching the block.

Now, at the engine, loosen the bolt/screw that clamps/retains the black threaded trunion of the throttle cable so that the black threaded trunion can be adjusted one way or the other.

With the engine running, apply throttle then return the throttle to the idle position. Repeat this procedure (adjust trunion, apply throttle, return to idle) until the idle setting you desire is reached constantly.

Now, screw the mechanical idle stop adjustment screw in until it touches the block, tighten thebolt/screw that retains the black threaded trunion. That's it.

Note: When using a flushette, have the hose on full blast. When using a flushette, the proper idle of a 20" shaft model is 1000 rpm, a 25" shaft model is 1200 rpm.

The timer base under the flywheel.... easy to see if it's sticking. Simply disconnect the throttle cable, move the vertical throttle lever slowly from one extreme to the other and observe the timer base (spark advance).
