trying to run a omc in my driveway. can someone tell me the correct way to flush/run a 84 omc stringer, its behind a 305. i was told the muff are ok to use, then better to put a auto flush kit on it, then told i have to run the pivot cap style. what are the pros and cons of each kit? where would i hook up a auto flush kit? thanks

Muffs will work but they are a pain in the arse. Here is a link for the flush attachment kit. It replaces the right outdrive pivot cap for the outdrive. The seller has his nomenclature a bit mixed up, but it will work for your unit. And it is a good price compared to some I have seen. I would scoop it up. No more messing around with the mickey mouse ears like all those poor black anchor owners have to do.

Absolutely not. Water goes both ways. You can run your motor any way your need/want to. Everything gets more water than it needs. I usually run the hose about 1/4 open. Have done so for 34 years.

In that time, I have only replaced two impellers. In both cases the old impellers were still usable, but while I was in inspecting them, I went ahead and changed them.

This Merc stuff of needing to replacing the impeller every year is just plain dumb. This is one of the reasons I like the later OMC Stringers.

How long have you owned the boat?

I am assuming that your stringer is like my stringer. Just go get a washing machine hose from Walmart and hook it up to the flush port. That's what I use on mine.

He does not have a 'flush port' yet. That is what he is asking about and that is what I provided him a link for.

Oh, I thought all stringers came with that. The few I've seen have it. Just don't forget to put that cap back on when your done. If you don't the impeller will flow more water out the flush port than it will into the engine. I've never even tried to use muffs on a stringer. It looks like it's be a real pain in the butt to get right though.

Re: omc flushing

ive owned the boat for 2 months now. im redoing the floor, and the transom. the boat is a 84 malibu. the hourmeter says 320 hrs, but the guy that i bought it from had the lower rebuilt. the engine runs good, have not been able to get it into gear yet and make it steer. i found a wrong wrapped cable and the shift interrupter not mounted. so i pulled the engine to do the floor and transom, now almost done i just want to get all the parts that i need to run it right and try to avoid any later problems. do you think that i should change the impeller or put it together and see how it goes? also can i run synthetic oil in the outdrive, like amsoil 70-90. thanks for any help.

What seems to be amiss? i found a wrong wrapped cable and the shift interrupter not mounted. so i pulled the engine to do the floor and transom, now almost done i just want to get all the parts that i need to run it right and try to avoid any later problems. do you think that i should change the impeller or put it together and see how it goes? Hard call to make at arms lenth. Do you have it apart? If there is any doubt as to it's age or condition I would do it. Then you'll have a start point. If you don't run it thru the sand or run it without water I'd give it a good 10 years before you should change it again. also can i run synthetic oil in the outdrive, like amsoil 70-90. Absolutely, probably the best! thanks for any help.

Check the ball gears too. Shouldn't be over approximately 20% worn. And remember not to run with the outrive in any up position except for emergency shallow water, then only about 15-20% up at slow speed. Also never hit the down toggle and let it slam to the bottom. Always bump it down or you stand the chance of spitting the worm drive shaft out the back.

Got any pics of your re-floor?

no pics of the refloor yet. i was told that the ball gears can be worn up to 75% and that that is the time to replace them. when i run the engine in the driveway with the flush kit am i able to put it in drive and reverse or will i have issues. i just want to make sure it goes into gear before i do a shake down run at the delta. thanks again

Well get us some pics before it is too late to take them.

Someone gave you the WRONG, WRONG, WRONG information on the ball gear wear. Without consulting the BOOK, it is probably exactly the inverse of what you were told, ie, 25% allowable wear w/ 75% remaining.

And yes, with the the flush kit, you can shift the gears to your heart's content. Just remember you do not have the prop in the water to slow it down, so you want to give it time to loose momentum before you go into the opposite gear.
