Trent.... When a flywheel begins to hit anything in its vicinity (and nothing has come loose), it would have to be due to a main bearing failure which allows the crankshaft to tilt. At any rate, that's always been the case with the ones I"ve encountered.

OMC Flywheel Problem

I have a 1979 OMC 35hp (it's actually a Saildrive). The flywheel has started to rub against the stator coils causing a short to ground (I got no spark). I can't figure out why this is happenning all of a sudden...? Has anyone heard of this? Could this short have blown the power pack?

Re: OMC Flywheel Problem

One additional thought to add to Joe's - I've seen the armature plate bushing and the boss on the top of the cylinder & crankcase assembly worn so badly it causes the charge coil and sensor coil to hit the flywheel. Especially if the coils are mounted tight to the adjusting ring...

-John

Re: OMC Flywheel Problem

Thanks guys. I checked the crankshaft for play and couldn't detect any. Probably the bushing. Would the rubbing alone cause no spark or would that blow the power pack (thus, causing no spark)? Any ideas on a fix?

Re: OMC Flywheel Problem

Hi Trent

I had a couple of 35Hp and a 25HP too, same block. I had the problem too. I dont think power pack can be damaged, but the black ignition coil or the white sensor coil can be damaged. It isnt difficult to mesure. You can bee luckt too, the spark gets back, once you adjusted coils, but rare. Its easy to see where the problem is, having removed flywheel. Good motor, and reasonable economy !! good luck

OMC ( the Bomb) had/has an armature plate/engine boss repair kit for that, as well as others, that will re-align the plate to the block correctly. IF thats whats worn out. It is spendy but your only choise. Your dealer can look up the part number and availibliity by the service bulletin.
