Hi guys,

I am replacing my gimbal bearing, bellows, impeller, anodes, and ujoints on my 1991 sunbird corsair 198 with a 4.3 OMC motor and cobra outdrive. If you guys can help me with the following questions I'd greatly appreciate it:
1) Can I use automotive ujoints instead of boat ujoints.
2) Do I need to replace the oil seal next to the gimbal bearing? if so, how do I replace it? just don't want to damage anything since it's my first time.
3) Can I use any marine grease for the gimbal bearing? I was thinking Lucas marine grease or sta-lube from auto zone.
4) When/how often should I replace the anodes and what are the purpose of them?
5) Where is the impeller and water pump? I'm thinking in the upper unit.
6) Where should the shift cable bellow be? I did not see the shift cable bellow when I pulled the outdrive out. I saw youtube videos and on the mercruisers it is sitting right next to the other two bellows. I did however see a shift cable bellow inside the interior engine compartment. so I'm not sure.

Thanks guys, I really appreciate your help. If you can please answer in the order I asked it would be great!

To my fellow Marines on here Happy 239th. To my fellow Veterans thank you for your service and Happy Veterans day (tomorrow).

I forgot to mention that I am new to boating and this is my first boat that I got really cheap. Now I know why the seller wanted to get rid of it. I already pulled the outdrive and the gimbal bearing came off with the outdrive. It was just sitting on the shaft. I already bought a gimbal bearing puller and engine alignment tool. I have a cousin of a cousin that used to work on boats that will be helping me and am doing research myself. so combined with my mechanical capability I think I can save hundred dollars since I am a DIYer. I also wanted to ask if you guys have a rust busting solution you would recommend me use to soak the shaft in. I got a lot out with a wire brush and rust buster but want this thing clean. Thanks guys.

Howdy,

Welcome aboard!

1. YES.
2. you'll need to be more specific.
3. yes
4. Replace them way before they disappear (or the drive will become the anode!!)
5. If it's a Dog-clutch or early Cone-clutch Cobra, it's in the back of the drive (upper)
6. Dog-clutch Cobras don't really have a shift cable bellows like a Mercruiser

Now, in relation to the above, I noticed that you did not indicate what model you have. It's fairly important to determine that because you may have a 1990 model (although the difference between a 1990 and 1991 dog isn't significant)

More important though, you NEED a correct-model OMC service manual if you're going to do anything to that drive.(NOT Seloc, NOT Clymer or other manual that is probably much better suited to start your wood-stove!!)

To see parts pictures etc, go to http://epc.brp.com/ (you can leave the email field blank)

You can view some service manual info at http://boatinfo.no/lib/library.html I believe the manuals depicted are OEM OMC.

Cheers,

Rick
