OMC hard to select neutral

'88 Bayliner, 3.0 OMC. Has 'new' updated shift cable. Goes into gear extremely easy, but when trying to stop requires quite a bit of force to shift into neutral. What could cause this? Could it cause any damage by having to apply so much force to shift out of gear?<br /><br />Rebuilt engine, replaced half the floor, new trailer tires last week (blew out on way to lake)....just one more bump on the way to the water...!

Pure guess here, but have you checked out your ESA module?

Well, lets just say I've stared at it awhile! Not really sure how to check it out...? I do know that the idle doesnt change when trying to go out of gear..

Hi, I own a 1994 OMC Cobra outdrive on a 5.0 Ford. When I first bought the boat at the beginning of the season, she was shifting real nice. I also visited the web page someone referred to and its just like he says, you can shift if with your fingers. My problem is the same as the person who started this post. I can shift it into forward from neutral with no problems at all. Its just when its already in forward trying to get it back into neutral is difficulty. Now sometimes it works fine and other times I have to jiggle it to get it into neutral. Sometimes I have to go as far as forward all the way into reverse to get it to stop in neutral. I don't like the feel of that and would like to know how to fix it. Any help would be appreciated.<br /><br />Rene G.
