OMC Ignition switch fuse, or circuit breaker, or whatever

1987 Dixie Bandit 170
3.0L GM 4cyl
Cobra Stern

Had a buddy attempt to loosen the bolt for the distributor to adjust timing. He grounded out something, and sparks flew.

Now..

Key switch has no power. The "B" on the back of the switch is not receiving voltage from battery. The inline fuse is fine.

Somewhere there is supposed to be a 40a or 50a circuit breaker, fuse, or "red button" but I don't see it anywhere. All I have found is (view attachment below). but it is mostly hooked up for the trim (I think)

I tried pushing the red middle piece only to notice that it comes off and there is a green dot/button on the inside. I haven't pushed it yet, Im not even sure its a button.

Anyone have any information on this?

There is a fusible link coming from the starter to the line that feeds the fuse panel at the helm and the circuit breaker for the trim. That circuit breaker is after the fusible link. Does your trim work?

You probably don't have power to anything. Why don't you do what I suggested? Follow the cable from the battery up. You will likely run into either a fusible link or a block that contains a large fuse in it.

OMC used fuses, not circuit breakers, for the main power (as I recall) Look back around the shift plate and main plug at the fuses.
The odd part is, in your picture, that is the trim relay/circuit breaker. But it didn't start being used till 89. So there may be some things on your engine that just isn't as it was when new.

If its like most OMCs of that vintage the 2 50 amp fuses are where Don told you.
Inside black rubber boots near the shift cable bracket,usually starboard side of the engine just behind the bracket.
They really don't look like fuses but just rubber wire plugs.You will find the fuse inside.

Buddy Listen.. I have the same Problem you have.. .. Listen to this Guy above..

Trace the Wire that connects From the starter to the Solenoid.. there is a big Rubber with Metal Lock.. open it up! there is a big Fuse..

that is the problem.. i just have the same problem happen to me it toke me a few days to figure it out.. i found it by accident.. I dint know that rubber contain a big fuse.. ..

if you dont want to trace no wire or its a hard place to search... look at all your rubber that has wire . check it very carefully. and see if you could open it.. if so there is a fuse in it..

omg, are you talking about a round rubber connector with a metal paper clip looking thing holding it tight? if so I thought that was the quick connecters to remove the engine. going to go look now anyways, will post my findings.

OK. so its FIX?? was is the round rubber with the CLip??

well sort of. Yes its fixed, it was disquised as one of those quick release boots for taking out a engine.

There are 2 huge rubber boots with "paper clips". 1 connects wires to each other, one connects wires but with copper studs.

Then there are 4 small boots with "paper clips" connecting wires

then there are 2 more small boots with NO paper clips that look like all the others, but surprise, fuses inside!

I found it this morning after your post, replaces the fuse, and the ignition came back to life. The trim however did not. I checked the other fuse, it was fine, checked the new fuse again, it was fine, made sure all boots were tight again, and still no trim. I cranked the motor (to do what I was originally doing and finish adjusting the distributor) and ran it for a bit then Magically, yes i said magically, the trim started working again.

Im pretty sure the vibration from the motor connected something and allowed the trim to close circuit, but I couldn't find anything loose. I bet tomorrow I will find it because its test and tune day for me at the lake. Sure enough I bet it goes out again when I'm way out.

Better take some tools and paddles =o)

BTW There is NO "red button", and NO "reset button"(besides the circuit breaker for the trim). I have talked to a handful of mechanics before I found the little booger, and everyone I spoke to led me on a goose chase. Long story short...

Follow the wires from the trim pump up behind the engine.There is a plastic connector,Pull it apart and clean the connections.Also clean the wire connectors at the trim solenoids...i bet it will cure that problem.
