OMC Impeller Issues

Making a long story short, my '86 4.3L Cobra is not picking up water through the impeller on the outdrive. I have installed a new impeller with plate and seals. I have pulled the impeller three times now to find out each time that one of the fingers was spun back the wrong direction after being installed in the correct direction. This new Sierra impeller does fit tighter on the shaft than the OMC impeller. And the impeller shaft/engine does roll back slightly when it is turned off, but not worse than any other engine. Any ideas as to why one of the fingers is getting turned backwards after installed and how to prevent it?

Well problem solved for now. I put back in the old impeller and made sure the vent hole in the housing was clear and it works fine now. I still need put a new impeller in though.
