I have a 1975 Bayliner Admirality 2050 Cuddy with a 5.0L Ford Inboard V-8 and an OMC drive unit. I was out on the lake for about 3 1/3 hours pulling tubes...fishing, etc, and on the way back to the public launch the engine started to smoke, and I noticed the temp guage was at 240. I had been running hard all day with absolutely no problems. I immediately shut the engine down. I was told that the impeller was what failed. I know nothing about boats, and I am in desperate need of ANY advice. Thank you ahead of time...

Re: OMC Impeller?

» Mercruiser, Volvo and OMC I/O or Inboard Engine Problems is the best place to post this question. Maybe a MOD will move this to that section.

Depending on how comfortable you are with mechanics will depend on who fixes it. It is not an impossible job hoever it can be frustrating. Impellars are cheap and it takes about 1 to 1-1/2 hours from start to finish. It must be done on dry land.

Re: OMC Impeller?

Mechanically I am very comfotable, but I dont know where to start. I was hoping to find an online service manual for free that would let me know what to do. I might just order one from this sight just to have. How much of the stern drive has to be disassembled to get to the Impeller? Are there other things that I should take care of while I have it apart? I like to do things ONCE!! Again, Thank you ahead of time...

Re: OMC Impeller?

If it a OMC 1975 model then it is a stringer drive and to replace the water pump impeller is not easy at all.

Before I would do that I would first due some troubleshooting to see if that is the problem.

Outdrive impeller pumps water up to the engine. Pull the hose from the out drive and with the boat in the water see how much water it pumps. Should be a steady stream. If you do this on Muffs then water hose pressure can make it look like the outdrive impeller is working when it is not. Check it without the engine running and then start the engine. Should see a big difference.

Engine water pump sucks water into the block and circulates water thru the block and head. Make sure the belt did not fall off and that the pulley is turning.

Thermostat opens when the temperature reaches 150 degrees and lets the hot water out to the exhaust manifold. Make sure the thermostat opens at 150 degrees and is not blocked.

Manifolds could be plugged up so no hot water can leave. If no hot water leaves then no cold water comes in.

You could have a blown head gasket letting exhaust gas get into the water causeing it to over heat.

After you find the source of the problem then you can repair.

If your going to keep that boat buy the OEM Manual as you are going to need it. Even for normal maintenance you will not find all the Grease fitting without the manual.
