omc intermediate fluid leak

Hello, I am new to the boating thing and am in need of some help. I have an OMC 175, 1976 model with a 302 Ford. It needed new ball gears so I changed those with out much problem. I did change the seals. I drained all fluids from the lower unit, no signs of water. I started replacing fluids into the intermdiate housing, when I started I noticed it was dry, no fluids at all. I kept putting gear oil in until it was full, would wait a while for air to push out. I did this several times never did fill up. I pulled the motor cover and saw the bilge was filling with gear oil. I pulled the gas tank to take a look and noticed a small drain hole of some sort on the fly wheel dust cover and the oil was dripping out of that. Does that mean the race and bearings need replaced? I did notice the front bearings on the drive shaft were rusty and dry.

A sad welcome to iboats coachmc. It sounds like your forward intermediate drive shaft seal is shot. I believe the only way to change it is to pull the motor. Those are pretty durable seals so maybe it was damaged when you replaced the shaft.

Thanks for the welcome. The thing is I did not pull the shaft in the intermediate, just pulled the plate on the outside and replaced those seals. Could it be that it was overfilled and it is coming out of an overflow device?

There is an inner seal as well! All should be replaced!

If you overfilled it, it would have run out the fill hole on the outside of the transom. Regardless of the cause the forward seal has to be shot. For the Hypoid to flow out as fast as you pour it in, it must be torn. Usually those seals are all double lipped.

There is actually two seals back to back... to leak that fast I wonder if they are disloged somehow.

Thanks, I should be able to pull the shaft from the back of the boat and put in new seals on the boat side with out pulling the entire intermediate? Does that sound correct?

That is correct. The engine can stay where it is....
