omc king cobra outdrive wont stay adjusted

A friend has a 1987 25' sea ray sundancer with a omc king cobra 460.The shift cable wont stay in adjustment.Is he doing something wrong?

What color is the cable?

If it's black, replace it.

If it's red it may still need to be replaced. There also may be excessive wear in the linkage.

Ensure that he has a correct OEM OMC service manual and he probably needs to read THIS

That black cable / red cable problem was from 20 years ago. Since the black cables didn't work, I would bet it was replaced.
Any time the cables wear inside or start corroding they act like they won't stay in adjustment, because you really can't adjust them. Time to replace the cable.
