omc king cobra removal

I have began the switch from omc to merc. to remove the king cobra do I need to dis connect the shift cable there is a black plastic assembly there... Six bolts and trim ram are off but it is bieng a bugger.

If you're just talking about pulling the drive, it doesn't matter and it doesn't matter what gear it's in either......What plastic thing are you talking about?

Once you're ready to pull the gimbal from the transom, you remove the inner transom plate first (of course) .....Then (carefully/gently) pry the gimbal from the back. The lower shift cable will stay with the gimbal.

If someone put some sort of sealant on the back, it's not gonna come off easily.

plastic piece was were the shift cable goes in. It took some elbow grease and it came right off.

I'm not sure you needed to remove it. The shift cable could just stay connected when you remove the gimbal unless you can't remove the inner transom plate until it's off...

What boat is this on? pictures?

will take some pics in the morning. I did not remove the plastic piece it stayed on the shift cable as you described. I stopped working on it earier because I was afraid of breaking something. But, after you confirmed I had done all that was required to remove the drive I went back and gave it a good tug and it came right off. Tomorrow I will remove the bench seat and pull the engine and transom. and post pics of the progress. What kind of numbers gph and mph do you get with your 454 and what size prop do you run? I am repowering with a 350 280hp mecruiser 4bbl

This boat used to do about 60 at 5000 rpm (460, 1.43:1 King Cobra, 20p SS prop)

I did not know what it burned before but it wasn't all that bad if I didn't do a lot of WOT runs. Probably 10-15 gph at "cruising" speeds.

Now it does 57 (GPS)mph WOT at 4600 RPM (454, 1.81:1, 26p props)

The engine is completely stock. I now have a Lowrance LMF-200 multi-function gage that does measure fuel flow. At 30mph it burns 10 gph. At 45 It's about 15.

At WOT it's about 24gph... 7-8gph when pulling a wake-boarder...
