Hello all,
I am replacing gimble bearing and bellows on a OMC king cobra 460, '89 Four Winns. Have done several Mercs, first OMC. I am trying to figure out how to disconnect the lower shift cable. I cannot access it from inside the boat and was wondering what type of seal there is at the transom. I've got the nut loose on the back side of the bellhousing but cannot get the cable to rotate, nor is there enough slack in the cable to rotate the bellhousing, Any help?
Thanks,
John

Re: OMC King Cobra Shift cable

why are you trying to disconnect shift cable?
just remove snap ring out of exhaust bellows, push bellows out of the way.
loosen clamp on main bellows pry out bellows from bell housing. then remove bellows from transom bracket.

the shift cable runs through a tube thats what seals the transom bracket.if you want to remove the cable: disconnect from shift bracket, loosen off small square screws pull off cable end. loosen the nut on the cable, unscrew cable guide.pull inner cable out from back of bell housing.
undue anchor nut from bell housing, push cable forward to clear bell housing the pull out of transom .to reinstall revere this procedure there are several posts on how to adjust shift

Re: OMC King Cobra Shift cable

Thank you for the reply, I've already removed the cable core and the aft of both bellows which attach to the bellhousing. I was just assuming that in order to remove the bellhousing to better access the gimble bearing, I need to disconnect the shift cable. Am I incorrect? You are saying that I can replace both bellows and the gimble bearing without disconnecting the shift cable from the bellhousing and removing the bellhousing? Does the shift cable have a bellows like the Merc, if so, I can not find or see it. Thanks for your help,
John

yes bellows bearing etc can be replcaced with bell housing on and shift cable still attached.
the shift cable does not have a bellows it runs through a hose the end of hose is above water line so boat doesn't leak.

when o.m.c. designed the cobra they used a lot of merc technology then they improved it to make servicing easier
if i were you i would purchase a manual

Thanks for your help, much appreciated. One more question, Is the regular cobra bellows kit the same as for a king cobra? I'm assuming not because the regular cobra has a shift cable bellows? Do you know where to find the kit online as I am having a little trouble locating it myself.

the bellows is the same as cobra your drive is a king cobra clutch dog model as apposed to the king cobra cone clutch model
take the engine model number to a bombardier (brp) evinrude/johnson dealer and they can supply correct bellows and all other parts that you might need

Re: OMC King Cobra Shift cable

FYI, 1989 King Cobras were/are the same set-up as a "regular" Cobra with the following exception... The lower unit is/was a V-8 outboard gearcase.. Bigger case and larger gears specific to the V-8 outboard. Other than that, all adjustments and parts are the same.. As to Wynters methods of servicing... may I suggest you buy a factory manual, make a good friend of your local OMC mechanic (after you determine he knows his #$*@, ) or... both!!

Don't get me wrong, I appreciate the help from those that do help. Although, I could do with out Guys that think everybody except themself is an idiot.

I have and (when need to) refer to the "factory" service manual.Sometimes on a regular basis. And I've done a few! To not HAVE a manual is your choise!! However ,May I suggest that you HAVE one! Attempting to teardown and reassemble your Cobra based only on sometimes "marginaly correct info" from this or other boards (not that you can't get great info....)is ,well, your decision! If I ask'd for proper teardown of my Chevy transmission, and someone "suggested" I consider purchasing something better than a Chilton/Seloc book (ya know it COULD get dicy), that just may be the best advise he could give me. OH, and to make friends with the local transmission guy!! BTW, alot of us don't answer some of these posts as many of them have been answer'd before, some many times over!. I'll give you two more helpful hints, 1) do a search and you'll find most of your answers in the archives and 2) I don't question your mechanical ability, I already know! You seem to have this Cobra thing down pat anyway! Huh? My first post was not ment to be a "dig", this one is!

The OMC OEM Service Manual for the setup and year of your engine/drive. Also suggest you get the OMC Parts Manual as well. Can often find them on eBay.
