my king cobra 454 dosn't go into forward gear after a 30 min. or so ride. Gose into N,& reverse but not forward. until let in N for approx. 5 min.then it gose in again, whats problem
i dont no the drive well at all

but from what i have read on the site drives with cone clutchs may have a problem going into gear if the oil is to full or the worng type

the cone clutch has to squeze the oil out of the way to go into gear

tommays
tommays,
i had heard that to in reguard to it being to full, but before i put it in with just lowering oil i want to see if anything else might be done, thanks
drive unit should be filled with hi-vis gear oil hpf or volvo/penta oil may cause your symtom
also check cable and attachment points for excessive movement
marinemech 1 one mech said to try volvo/penta syn 30 weight oil, which they used in the old volvo io's. but i'am not to sure it's alot lighter than the 80/90 w oil
i have no idea about 30w oil in the cobra.
we had a king cobra cone clutch drive that we filled with the volvo/penta oil for the s.x. cobras. the affect was we lost a gear (reverse), after a lot of head (& ***) scratching we talked with omc service at the time they told us that the volvo oil was too slippery for the omc cone clutch. we drained and refilled the drive with omc hi-vis oil and problem went away.
ya i think i'am going to change it out before i put in, i don't light the idea of that light of oil. next i talked with one guy about the cable adjustment & how tech. it was to get right on with it. i still think i have a bad cone.
yes i agree with lou you have merc oil in an omc product drain real good and fill with omc/bombardier hi-vis
the worst that can happen is it doesn't fix problem
30 weight engine oil used to be standard in old volvo and BMW cone clutch drives..

there is some doubt also in my mind as to what exactly the merc gear oil is.. the high performance synthetic does say what it is.. hypoid 80/90 but the standard stuff seems to keep it a secret..

i rebuilt an old BMW cone clutch drive recently.. every query produced use 80/90.. but the plate on the drive said use straight 30 weight engine oil..

can anybody actually produce any data saying what the cheaper (standard) merc stuff is.. i really have searched high and low for information and i cant find any..

everyone assumes the standard merc gear oil is the thicker stuff but i aint so u sure.. in fact everyone assume drives period use the thicker stuff

my manual says use merc gear oil.. but it dosnt say what it is.. just to use it..

dont get me wrong.. if it wasnt for the BMW thing i would also just assume 80/90 was the stuff to put in outdrives.. now i aint so sure.. he he

trog100
I'm having a simular problem. 1992 King Cobra cone style and I've had it in 2 different shops...3 times. It will go in and out of gear fine untill you put in under a load ie...anything above an idle. When I put it into neutral and try to go back into forward it will not go. Shut the boat off, wait about 15-20 minutes and it goes into gear again. This has been going on for over 2 seasons and everytime I think it's fixed we are stranded again. Last shop bill $1400.00 and replaced the brass? gear and some bearings. I'm at a loss.
